A Foundations News

A Foundation is “not sustainable in either the long or the short term.” This was the judgement made by Arts Council England rejecting an application towards 33% of our costs in Liverpool for 2010 - 2011. Therefore A Foundation is closing.

I’ve just got back from the launch of Liverpool Discovers which is great and a sort of lagacy of 08 as its created by the same people who did go-superlambananas and go-penguins and supported by the council. But now you can add cancellation of the Liverpool Boat Show to the list which is a major blow – people just aren’t buying enough yachts these days apparently.
It’s a real shame about a foundation – I hadn’t mentioned the closure on artinliverpool as there has been no official anouncement which is typical of them, although they had great shows, communication with the rest of the local arts community was not a strong point in my opinion. Though I don’t suppose that would have made much difference – sadly the days of big expensive art events are gone at least for a while. But agree with Lewis, there’s still far more going on here than before and its more co-ordinated and the rest of the country is now more aware of it.

Groundbreaking A Foundation group closes after 13 years as funding cuts bite.

ONE of Liverpool’s most ground-breaking cultural institutions has closed due to a lack of funding.

A Foundation, a major player in the city’s Biennial festival of contemporary art, has shut its Greenland Street gallery as well as its London base and has ceased to operate with immediate effect.

EMILY SPEED

It’s been announced that A Foundation in Liverpool is to close.

I’m really sad about this, not only did I have an incredible experience as part of the A Curriculum residency last year, but I am a big fan of their ambitious commissions, beautiful building and role in the Liverpool Biennial. It’s a significant loss for the city.

Liverpool is the poorer today for the demise of the A Foundation. But accountants will regard it as money saved in a minority sector. Has anyone ever erected a public art work to honour an accountant?

England is a poorer place with the A Foundation closed. In my opinion, one of the best spaces in the country. Very sad to hear this.

A Foundation made a trip to Liverpool really worthwhile. I wonder how many arts council organisations are 'sustainable'..without arts council funding. And how much money goes down the drain on liverpool arts organisations that aren't worth the trip?

Pretty late onto this news. I hope at some point A Foundation will return, I had a great time there and advise anyone going to Liverpool to find it.

Again, hope it isn't gone forever.

As someone who worked for A Foundation I would say it was hardly renowned for it's 'big expensive art shows', nor did it neglect its so called local responsibilities, having show cased northern stars and local public artists whilst employing local workers. Knowing it also provided a platform for upcoming and exceptional contemporary artists. If the Country are more aware of anything it should be the loss of a very exciting and influential gallery.
However, I do recall fixing the number of visitors on record and working extra hard to promote the gallery to 'the public'. I hope this is a very sad and unjust end to a great gallery and not a sign of things to come, where sustainable arts actually means financially beneficial culture.
Ian may say there's far more going on and the county is more aware, but i remain skeptical, at least until the next A foundation crops up.

Any plans to open this up again and look for funding elsewhere? I run a marketing company and would love to help with something like this.
